Peaceful times

I saw Dawn yesterday and she was doing the best I've seen her after a surgery. She ate a little and would make humorous comments from time to time. She slept and was quite peaceful and comfortable most of the time I was there. Her knee looks good and they check to see if the blood is flowing well every so often....so far so good. I'm sure she is currently planning her escape!

Surgery update

Dawn came out of surgery around midnight last night. She was doing well, but was up most of the night. The next couple days are usually a struggle with pain, discomfort, etc. I am going to see her tomorrow and I will update you all on her progress. Keep her in your thoughts and have a nice holiday.

Hello!
I just wanted to let everyone know that Dawn's next surgery is scheduled for Christmas Eve. She picked this day because it was the earliest they could get her in and I think she just wants to get it over with.
I asked her last Saturday - Dawn, you don't care that it's on Christmas Eve? And she said "No." So, Santa will have to make a special stop for Dawn.
The good news is that this should be her last surgery, which is more than exciting. And as soon as she heals from this surgery, she can start practicing how to walk on her prosthetic legs. She told me she is tired of sitting! I can't blame her!
As soon as I hear that she's out of surgery next week, I will send a new update.
I know Dawn's family and friends want to send an extra thank you for all of the support everyone has shown throughout this year. The letters, emails, donations, and prayers have helped more than you will know. So, a big thank you to all of you!

Another Surgery

Dawn had a surgery yesterday so that the doctor could clean up some spots on her knee and fit her for a new brace.

She came out okay and was in recovery yesterday evening and she sounded like she was doing well. Nicole said that she received an email from Dawn and she seemed to be in good spirits.

I spent the afternoon with her on Saturday and although she knew she had the surgery on Monday, she was in good spirits and being the Dawn we all know and love.

Unfortunately, we thought this would be the last surgery for her, but she will have one more after this. And then, it will be time to celebrate!

Sorry I have not been keeping up to date with the blog, but Cole is doing a great job keeping up with the CarePages. I will see Dawn on Thursday and I will let you all know how she is doing.

Dawn came out of surgery last night around 9pm. She is doing good and is currently in the burn unit at University of Chicago. The surgery went well, however the doctor said that her knee cap was broken. She had a fall about a month ago and we are thinking this must have been the cause of the broken knee cap. Unfortunately, she will have to have another surgery to reconstruct her knee. This is difficult news because I know these setbacks are very frustrating for Dawn.

Dawn will need a lot of positive energy and good thoughts sent her way. Keep her in your thoughts and I will keep you all posted.

A small step back

Hello everyone! Sorry I have not been keeping up with the updates, but hopefully you have been reading the CarePages because Coley has been doing a great job. Last Tuesday, Dawn and I went to see Dr. Gottlieb because her other knee was not looking good. It was then that he informed us that she would have to have surgery. It's crazy, because the knee she was having trouble with a couple of months ago was just about healed and then the other knee started to get infected. So she went in for surgery today around 2pm at University of Chicago and it will take about 5 hours. Let's keep Dawn in our thoughts and hope for a quick recovery so she can start her therapy on her leg prosthesis. She has been so remarkable and has come so far. We'll be thinking of you D, STAY STRONG!

La vida

Dawn has been spending her days at her apartment in the North side of chicago. She attends outpatient physical and occupational therapy at RIC. We just went to the doctor the other day and he said her knee is looking better. He took some samples to be sent to the lab and has not completely ruled out surgery, but is optimistic that it will heal on its own. Once the lab results are back and everything looks good, she will be able to start therapy using her leg prosthetics. She uses her arm prosthetics to do daily activities such as picking up the phone and eating and will continue to practice using them to perfect these activities. She is constantly surrounded by friends, family and her boyfriend Scott, who has been amazing throughout all of this. She continues to be an inspiration for all of us and is very optimistic. We are always laughing as we adventure through this journey and learn new things. Humor is our sanity! She is living life as before...shopping, dining out, going to the movies, playing with her nieces and nephew and hanging out with friends and family. Life is good and as she gains more independence it will only get better!

The benefit was an amazing success and it is due to ALL of you that supported Dawn. We were overwhelmed with the number of people who came and it was so wonderful to see everyone! Thanks for helping us to raise even more money by bidding on silent auction, raffle, split the pot and raffle baskets. Hopefully, some of you walked away with some good items!

Dawn's Homecoming

Dawn will be leaving rehab on Friday and moving into her apartment in the city! She may have to return and be admitted in 4-6 weeks but we are not sure for right now. The doctor looked at her knee and took labs and he wants to wait a few weeks and look at it again. So, since she can't utilize her legs in rehab while her knee heals, she will be going home. Once the doctor gives his approval she can start therapy on her legs and this may be inpatient or outpatient. For now, we are all excited that she will finally be out of the hospital! She is doing well with her arm prosthetics and tools and regularly brushes her teeth and eats with them.

Dawn is also very excited to see everyone at the benefit. Thank you to everyone who has donated, sold tickets, and given their time and effort in contributing to this event for Dawn. As much as she has inspired us, the people who have reached out to help have been just as inspirational so THANK YOU. Most of all, we would like to thank Carrie Beltz (Dawn's cousin) who has been diligently working for months to make the benefit possible.

Just a reminder of all the benefit details:

Friday, July 18th from 7pm- 12am @115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., Merrionette Park.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $35 per person.

There will be food and drinks. The band "Replica" will be playing some of your favorite songs and a DJ will follow. There will be lots of raffle and silent auction items- cash and checks will be accepted. Also, there is a cash machine outside of Bourbon Street. It will be a great time and we hope to see everyone there in support for Dawn!

News and important announcements

Dawn has been doing very well and when you see her you can tell by how great she looks. She continues her therapy sessions during the week. Unfortunately, she has not been working with her leg prosthetics because they are still concerned with her knee. They are still hoping it will heal on its own so she won't need surgery.

Dawn had another busy weekend with friends and family. She really takes advantage of her day passes from the rehab and went to her apartment for a bbq, a birthday party and the movies this weekend. It is so great to see her and she has such a positive attitude! She looks healthy and strong and is truly an inspiration to be around.

We got the results back from our first Jewel shop and share and I am proud to say that we raised $3610.12 for luv-a-dub! That is a lot of shopping! Thanks to everyone for your support. Our last shop and share is next week and I will post the dates so that we can have continued success!

Lastly, there will be an important benefit meeting a Carrie's house at 6pm, Tuesday, July 8th. Please bring all ticket stubs and baskets. If you were sent raffle tickets to sell, please have the stubs/money into Carrie or Olivia by this week. It is very important that we get these this week so we can have everything ready for the benefit! It is only 11 days away and Dawn is very excited to see everyone.

Getting her life back

Dawn has had an eventful week. Gone are the days when you could stop by the rehab and expect she will be there. She is truly getting her life back and was busy everyday this week. In addition to her regular 5 hours of therapy sessions daily, her evenings have been occupied with visits from Chicago Fire soccer star, Diego Guiterrez (he will be at the benefit!). Also, she went to dinner and a Cirque de Soleil show on Friday. She still has her many visitors, but it is good to see that you can't always expect her to be there.

She is getting stronger everyday and she says she can feel her body coming back. She even wants to ask if there is a gym she can go to so that she can do some more challenging exercises! She hasn't walked on her leg prosthetics since the first week because she has some blisters on her legs that she has to allow to heal. But, I changed her dressings on her legs last night and they are almost healed! Her knee on her left leg is a bit of an issue because it keeps opening. They may need to add more skin to it, but let's hope it just strengthens and heals on its own.

Dawn got another pass to spend the day away from the rehab. She had a nice lunch with Scott and the girls came over to her apt in the evening. Dawn looks as beautiful as ever- I'm sure you are all looking forward to seeing her smiling face at the benefit!

Update

Sorry I have not been writing any updates lately but I was in Colorado for a much needed vacation. I hope you all have been keeping up with Dawn's CarePage. Coley has been giving some great updates! In case you haven't, this is some of the exciting things that have happened in just the past two weeks:

Dawn has been walking! She started by walking only 55 feet and everyday she walks a little more! Go Dawn! She has also been enjoying her weekends away from the hospital. She went to her apartment one Saturday and then to her father's house to celebrate Father's Day. She is getting her life back and spending her time doing the things she loves!

The benefit is soon approaching so if you are selling tickets, raffle or benefit, get them sold! Also, if you need benefit tickets contact Amy Rohan or another committee member. Don't forget to save the date, July 18th! Any donations/baskets for the benefit should be given to a committee member to bring to our meeting on Tuesday, June 24.

Nurse Dawn

Dawn is getting stronger everyday and you can see it! Her arms are looking very fit and strong and you can see the benefits of her therapy. She still has some nausea which is very frustrating for her because it inhibits her ability during her therapy sessions. Being "nurse Dawn", she is attempting to diagnose what is causing the nausea and is making speculation that one of the many meds she is on is causing it. She is definitely taking charge of her own health and can feel any changes in her body.

Benefit committee members are asking that all sponsors and any gift basket donations/silent auction items be in by June 24th. We need to collect all of these items so that we have our inventory and can start organizing it for the benefit. It is only a month away, July 18th, so save the date and come and have fun while supporting Dawn on her journey that lies ahead!

Again, we cannot thank you enough for all the donations, kind notes and support Dawn has already received from so many of you. Dawn is overwhelmed with everyone's generosity!

enjoying the weather

Dawn has been feeling better since her treatment. She also has been practicing using her upper body prosthetics and even brushed her teeth with them! She continues to eat with the device she's always been using and has seemed to have mastered that. Friday she sat outside by RIC and enjoyed the scenery. Her room with a view gives her a constant movie to watch, she said. She loves watching the boats on the lake. Dawn has always had a connection with water- she surfed in California and took sailing lessons in Chicago.

On Saturday, Dawn, Colleen and I went to the Hancock building, had a Jamba Juice and sat and people watched for a while. Then, we went to Bistro 110 and had lunch. It was a great afternoon! Dawn is back to enjoying life and it is nice to see her feeling so much better.

Back to RIC

After a lot of waiting, Dawn finally had her treatment yesterday and she returned to the Rehab center around 6pm. She says she is feeling a little better. Now we can again focus on her therapy and getting her stronger. I know she is ready for some challenges and she is definitely wants the luxuries of her own home.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Jewel Shop and Share! I will let everyone know the results when they are available.

Just a reminder that there is a benefit committee meeting on Tuesday, June 10th at 6:30 pm at Bourbon Street. This would also be a good time for people who have items to donate to drop them off. If you would like to see the facility that the benefit will be held at, I would recommend getting there by 5:45. The benefit is only a little over a month away so get your tickets!

I saw Dawn last night and she was a bit concerned because they were sending her to Northwestern hospital (up the street from RIC) for an overnight treatment. She has a lot of Calcium in her system which is a condition that often happens with people who are immobile for long periods of time. The doctor said that the calcium in her bones is "leaching off of them and entering her system". This is the cause of the fatigue and nausea Dawn has been experiencing the past week. Dawn was taken to Northwestern last night around 10:30. They will give her the treatment through an IV and are hoping she will be back in the morning for her therapy sessions.

As you can imagine, Dawn was worried and did not want to return to Northwestern because of everything that happened the last time she was there. However, they do not have the capability to perform the treatment at RIC and the doctor made it seem as if the treatment was minor and she would be feeling much better after she received it. Let's keep Dawn in our thoughts and hope she is back to her routine as soon as possible!

Room with a View

Dawn has moved to a new room with a view of the lake. It is much more spacious and brighter. She is now in room #606 at RIC.

Some of the girls went out with Dawn on Saturday night. We went to the Elephant Castle Pub and sat outside for appetizers. It was a nice night and Dawn enjoyed being out. The outdoor excursions always lift her spirits. She is doing well and getting stronger everyday.

DON'T FORGET TO STOCK-UP ON YOUR GROCERIES! Today starts the Jewel Shop & Share program. You can go shopping June 2, 3 and/or 4th with your official form! More Independence

Dawn had a weekend full of visitors which was nice. She is getting stronger and even asks for extra weights to work with during her physical therapy. She thinks it's "easy" and would like more challenging exercises. She is also eating on her own! For most dishes that use a fork or spoon, she is using a sling type device that has a fork or spoon attached to the end so that she may feed herself and she says the food tastes so much better! She has been out quite a bit this past holiday weekend and even had a date with her boyfriend Scott on Friday. They went out to eat and then to Navy Pier to watch the fireworks. She was out for 7 hours!!! It must have been great getting out of the hospital for so long. Although she did complain her butt hurt from the wheelchair. She has mastered her maneuvering in the wheelchair as well. She is starting to do some of the things she loves again including a girls night watching "The Bachelorette" last night and it is so wonderful to see!

Inspired

Dawn has been working hard everyday. She has been casted for prosthetics and in the meantime she has been learning how to use a motorized wheelchair. She has been working on transferring herself from her bed to her wheelchair and this task requires a lot of effort on her part. We went outside yesterday and Dawn practiced using the wheelchair in the driveway of RIC and took in some sun. She really enjoys her physical therapy and feels that she is getting the most out of it. Her goal right now is to be able to transfer herself from the bed to the wheelchair so that she may come and go as she pleases when she has free time. We watched a girl on her floor practice walking on her prosthetics that she just received and Dawn was inspired. She is ready to get hers and begin walking on her own. She told me yesterday that she will definitely be running in a marathon with her new legs! Dawn will continue to be a source of inspiration for all who know her.

New Beginnings

Dawn had her first shower in three months on Saturday (she has been having sponge baths in bed). She has been working hard with the occupational and physical therapists. Over the weekend her schedule was relaxed with only a couple hours of therapy per day, but on the weekdays so far she is having therapy about 3 hours a day and this will probably increase as she becomes stronger. Her spirits have lifted and she is truly Dawn again. She seems very happy to be at RIC and the more she learns how to use her new body, the more freedom she will have to explore her surroundings. She is able to use the speaker phone to talk and make phone calls with a button that they have attached to it. She changes channels on the TV and adjusts her bed all on her own. These are just some of the tasks she has mastered without the use of her hands in just a few days and I can only imagine the progress she will make in a month. We are all behind you Dawny and you are doing great!

Off to Rehab

Dawn left for rehab today at noon!!! The change of scenery is truly needed. She will begin her inspiring and challenging journey and will be working her butt off to regain her strength and learn to function with her new body.

Thank you EVERYONE for your continued love and support for Dawn. She has inspired us already and I can't imagine what amazing feats she will accomplish on her upcoming challenges.

FINALLY!

Dawn got her tracheal tube out yesterday which means she is finished with her surgeries!!! She will be going to RIC today if there is a bed open, otherwise we will be playing the waiting game. She can finally get a change of scenery and a new look at what her future holds!!!

The doctors did a culture on Dawn's legs and we are waiting for the results. If everything comes back fine with the culture, then they will be removing her tracheal tube, possibly today. They will first need to put a scope in her nose and throat to be sure everything looks good. The doctor said Dawn is "close" to leaving- very vague so it leaves room for interpretation. It seems so long that Dawn has been in the hospital and I can't wait for her to finally be out of the hospital and into rehab!! She has come a long way, but still has a long way to go. You're in our thoughts everyday Dawny.

Waiting for release

Dawn had hydrotherapy today. She also sat up in the chair for two hours. The doctor has not been by yet to give us an update on her legs....so we are waiting. She is in good spirits and is doing well over all. She says she is not experiencing any pain and is relatively comfortable considering. We are all just waiting for the next step.

Dawn is doing better but continues to emotionally struggle with her situation as anyone would. She has been tired the last couple of times I saw her, but she seems to be getting stronger each day. The doctors will be checking on her progress in a few days to give us a prognosis. We dare not mention the word rehab right now due to the disappointment from last week. Dawn needs a morale booster and hope to see the positive. We know she will do something amazing with her future!!

Dawn has made it through yet another surgery. She finished around noon and was back in her room around 2:30. She looked good this evening, probably the best I have seen her look after a surgery. There was a wound on her left leg that they mended and added more skin to and they also added skin to her right leg to reinforce the area. The doctors said they will check on it in 4 or 5 days to be sure everything is healing. Dawn was tired, but in good spirits considering. Way to fight through Dawny! We love you!

Surgery

Dawn went into surgery at 8 am. The doctors said they need to "clean up her left leg" so I am not sure exactly how long or how extensive the surgery will be. We are all very frustrated, Dawn included, that she has to have another. We are hoping to keep Dawn's morale up through all of this. We are thinking of you Dawn as you are in surgery again and hoping for a quick recovery so you can FINALLY be on your way to rehab.

Dawn had a good weekend. Unfortunately, the doctors said she will have to go to the operating room today. They are concerned with an area in her left leg. Her right leg is good. I will post more information later today when I find out the details. This will change any immediate plans to go to rehab. Let's hope whatever they do today is minor and that she can be back on the road to rehab as quickly as possible. She needs a change of scenery- I'm just a visitor and I know I do!

Ready for Rehab

Dawn has had a good week. She has been outside around the campus twice and has gotten some fresh air. Her appetite has improved and she seems much stronger. They have a bed ready for her at RIC the rehab hospital! We are just waiting for her doctor's approval and he has been at a convention. She is definitely ready to go too.

At the rehab hospital, she will re-learn how to do her daily activities with her new body and prosthetics. There is a kitchen and living room where she can practice simple tasks such as turning on a light or even cooking. RIC will give her back her independence!! It will take some time and a lot of work but it will definitely be worth it to Dawn.

On Sunday Dawn had an inspirational visit from a young girl, Erica Van Zuidam, who lost her limbs a few years ago due to bacterial meningitis. She was able to give Dawn some insight as to what she should expect during rehab and in the future. Erica was very positive and motivating for Dawn. She even took off her prosthetics the moment she came in the room just to show Dawn how truly easy it is. Erica goes to school at U of I and is independent. She drives, runs and does everything a girl in her twenties should do except maybe put her own ponytail in! (that was one thing she mentioned she couldn't do). It was so nice of Erica to come visit Dawn and give her such genuine, positive insight on her future. Thank you Erica!

On Monday, Dawn had a busy day. She had an intense workout and was resting when I arrived later that afternoon. She looked stronger and seems to be doing better. They were able to take blood so she should get the results of the culture back soon. They are still watching her legs to make sure everything is healing properly. As soon as they know for sure we can anticipate a more concrete date in which she will begin rehab. If everything goes as planned, Dawn will eventually be going to RIC (Rehab Institute of Chicago) which is located by Northwestern Hospital.

Dawn slept most of the morning while I was there. She had some yogurt and a smoothie for breakfast and went back to sleep. They want to draw blood, which is routine to check her hemoglobin, but are having difficulty finding a vein. They tried last night many times with no luck. We're not sure what they will have to do next so that they may draw blood. Dawn seems a bit weak and tired today but there could be many reasons for this. Let's hope for healthy veins so they can run the tests they need to!

On Thursday, Dawn was really sleepy and slept most of the evening while her sister visited. She's still on some heavy doses of pain medication, but the doctor advised that they will start weaning her off of them. Her arms have really healed great and her legs are well on their way. The doctor is still keeping an eye on two spots on her legs, but so far they are okay. Today they are hoping to wheel her outside for some fresh air and change of scenery. I'm sure this will be great for her morale.

Dawn had hydrotherapy again on Tuesday. She was doing her exercises when I came to visit. Her workout looked difficult and she was breaking a sweat. They were teaching her how to sit up on her own in bed as well as working out her muscles. I saw Dawn's determination while she did her workout and it gave me a glimpse of how successful she will be in rehab. They removed her central line and she now has a regular IV. She is making progress everyday and we are waiting for the doctor to tell us that she is on her way out of the hospital and into rehab!

Dawn has been sleeping a lot the past two days. She has been having hydrotherapy everyday and the doctors said that her legs look very good. We are still waiting for them to tell us that she is finished with her surgeries and Dawn is definitely ready to get her trache tube out. She had a bit of a fever the last few days and she is getting antibiotics to fight infection. Her catheter was removed today because they believe that is where the infection is. She was the best she's been since the surgery today, just tired. She is getting lots of love and attention from friends and family everyday. Keep getting stronger Dawny so you can get out of that hospital and into rehab!!

Dawn did not have a good night's sleep on Friday because of pain. They changed her dressings on Friday and the doctors said everything looks good. Dawn is experiencing a lot of pain because there are a lot of nerves in her legs that are very sensitive due to the surgery. This will improve and the pain will lessen as her wounds heal. She had a tough morning and needs a restful day of sleep.

Dawn is improving. She is taking less pain meds and was awake during my whole visit yesterday. She had 1/2 a cheeseburger for dinner and is starting to get her appetite back. She did some therapy exercises yesterday so she can start regaining her strength.

She is scheduled for surgery at 1:30 today as an "add on" surgery. However, if other surgeries go too long she may get bumped. As always, we are hoping that this surgery is her last!

Dawn had a busy morning. She had her dressings changed, sat up in the chair for a while, and ate some soup all while visiting with friends and family. She is having another good day so far. She did not sleep very well last night so she was a little tired today.

While she was getting her arm dressing change she was not very happy with the look of her arms. They are thin but I reminded her that during rehab she will regain her muscle tone and they will look much better. So to be funny she practiced her "Miss America wave"!

Dawn had a very good day today! She was comfortable most of the day and did not have too much pain. They switched her pain meds so she is much happier. She eats more and more everyday and seemed much stronger today. She sat up in the chair for 2 1/2 hours!!!

Dawn's mother was telling Dawn her story and all that she had been through. She is very aware of what has happened to her and even asked the doctor very specifically about her legs. I told Dawn about her CarePage and the blog I've created for her. I asked her what I should post when I get home and she said to post the following:

"Dawn got her poop tube removed today and is much more comfortable because of it, however she is having trouble pooping in a foreign place"

She is still silly Dawn and the translation for all of this is yes, she did get her poop tube removed and must tell the nurses when she has to go, BUT is having trouble going in the unfamiliarity of the hospital and hence has a bit of "stage-fright"!

I know that everyone who knows Dawn has thoroughly enjoyed this story! She's coming back little by little and it's WONDERFUL!!

I asked Dawn if she was ready to have visitors and she said "that's fine", but she would like visitors to call the hospital first so she can let them know if she wants visitors that particular day. Just like all of us, Dawn has good days and bad ones. Also, don't take it personally if she says she doesn't want visitors on a particular day. There are many factors that affect her daily decisions- pain level, mood, previous night of sleep, etc. Visitors from friends and family definitely lift her spirits and it brings her a lot of joy! Dawn had a better day yesterday. She seems to be getting her appetite back more and more. She ate a half a bowl of noodles and a mozzarella stick for dinner which was the most I've seen her eat in weeks! She seemed peaceful yesterday and her pain seemed to have lessened. Dawn sat up in the chair yesterday and doctors say this is very good for her lungs and whole body circulation. She is eating a little bit more each day. She is struggling to get through her pain, sadness and frustration with her situation. It is difficult to watch her go through this stage but we hope this will soon pass. Dawn had a rough morning yesterday dealing with anxiety and nausea. She took a nap in the afternoon and woke up feeling much better. She had a lot of questions about her condition and they were answered.

I would like to clarify any confusion about Dawn leaving in two weeks. Although doctors said that she MAY be leaving University of Chicago in two weeks that is their optimistic anticipation, however we have to remember this is usually not the case. Everything with Dawn is day by day. She continues her fight and there are many factors that affect her progress.

Dawn will be going into surgery today around 10 or 11 am. They plan on closing everything and finishing up. That is the plan but we will not know for sure until the surgery is complete and we have spoken to the doctors. Let's send our thoughts and strength out to Dawn for a good day!

Dawn got some much needed rest yesterday afternoon for over 3 hours. Because of the benefit committee meeting, she had visits from friends and family who she had not seen for a while. She was sad at first and said "it just sucks seeing everyone when all I can do is sit in this bed!", but later she enjoyed conversations with friends and family. She was very alert yesterday and did not seem to be too focused on her pain. She ate some soup and crackers, which was the most I've seen her eat in a week.

The doctors said that Thursday may be Dawn's last surgery! They also anticipate that she will be at University of Chicago for approximately two more weeks and will then go to a rehab hospital. All good news, but as we know things are day to day and can change. Dawn was in some pain yesterday evening and she definitely seems frustrated. She tries to eat but still feels nauseated so she is not able to eat very much. Hopefully as each day passes her pain will lessen and she will be able to eat more so she can get her strength back. She is still fighting courageously everyday!

Dawn's spirits have been down and her nausea and pain continue. She is definitely struggling to deal with her situation and the pain and discomfort she experiences does not help. We are waiting for this low to pass and in the meantime try to bring Dawn as much positive energy as we can. The doctors are checking her meds to see if perhaps this is what is causing her nausea/vomiting. It is important that Dawn gets relief soon so that she can have a regular diet and get stronger. For now we take it day by day and hope the next day is always better.

Dawn was nauseated and vomiting on Friday. The doctors did a CAT scan on her stomach to make sure there was nothing wrong and it came back negative. Dawn hasn't had much of an appetite lately and we are hoping that she will eat some more today. She was peaceful this morning and resting in between the chaos of the ICU. It has been 5 weeks that Dawn has been in the hospital and everyday she takes small steps in her recovery. She is definitely sick of the hospital as we all would be. She said she was feeling weak and tired today. We need her to start eating a regular diet so that she can get stronger. Just a few extra bites a day will get you there Dawny!

Dawn looked much better yesterday. Her skin is looking great and she was no longer swollen from her surgery. She is still in some pain and they are giving her meds for this. She has had difficulty sleeping so they gave her something to sleep last night and she slept for 12 hours!!! She definitely needs it. They are putting her smaller trache in today so that she may speak and eat again. She has been having some anxiety which is definitely expected. Unfortunately, tomorrow she may possibly be going in for surgery again. We are not sure for how long, but they are going to be working on her right leg. How much more can her poor little body take?? She is continuing her fight and always seems to battle through these surgeries. We will all be happy when all the surgeries are complete!

Dawn is fighting another battle today. The surgeries she had during the week have taken their toll. She has a fever, her heart rate is up and her hemoglobin is down which is a sign of infection. She is on three different antibiotics so this should help if there is an infection. She is not receiving visitors besides her immediate family today and her nurse is even being somewhat restrictive with them. At this point, she just needs as much rest as possible. Dawny, we need you to be strong and we send you all of our love and strength today so that you may continue to fight this battle!

Dawn's surgery lasted over 15 hours and finished late last night. Needless to say she is exhausted today and will need a lot of peace and rest. She had a lot of anxiety this morning when she awoke because she did not know where she was. Her vitals are good but her heart rate was high. On Wednesday, Dawn had a busy morning. She had her dressing's changed and had dialysis. Because of her busy morning, she was resting most of the day. She looked peaceful. She ate some yogurt, applesauce and a few bites of a bagel. She has a menu she can order meals from. She was in some pain so the nurse was giving her morphine. She now has a DVD player in her room so she can watch movies, although she did not seem very interested in it. She REALLY wants to be out of the hospital but understands it will be some time before she is fully recovered.

Dawn is doing very good today. The speech pathologist came and placed a valve over her trache so that she can speak. Right now she speaks with a light whisper but it will probably get stronger the more she uses her voice. Hopefully some of her frustration will be lifted. She is making real progress. They also gave her a couple spoonfuls of apple sauce and a piece of a cereal bar, which she didn't like very much but was able to chew and swallow. She will now order her meals from a menu and take food by mouth!!! We asked her to say a word when the valve was placed on her trache and she said "pizza"....I think the thought of getting food was on her mind! She sat up in the chair again today and looked very comfortable. The doctors are hoping that Dawn will only need one more surgery...what a relief. We can't wait to hear everything she has to say now that she will have her voice!!

On Sunday, Dawn was sitting in the cardiac chair for more than an hour. Dawn is alert, asking a lot of questions and they are getting answered. She was very tired because once again she did not sleep well the night before. The doctors are planning on giving her a sleeping pill at night so she can have a full night's sleep. Dawn was full of expression today and made a lot of different looks to express what she was feeling. She is definitely planning her escape, often asking friends and family if they have their car with them! Dawn will be having surgery today around 3 or 4. They will be working on her legs and her right arm. Stay strong Dawn, we love you!

Dawn sat up in a cardiac chair for an hour today. She was very excited to move out of the bed for a while. She had a restless night of sleep Friday evening so after that hour in the chair she was very tired. She is also off the morphine drip and is being given it for pain only upon request. She had dialysis for 3 hours this afternoon. She even got to sip a little water when she was in the chair. She is becoming more alert and is giving lots of smiles.

Dawn's liver is working on its own!!!! This is some good news from the doctors. Unfortunately, her kidneys are still in failure, but the doctor does not anticipate this to be permanent. She will be on dialysis 3 times a week until her kidneys can function on their own. She is becoming more and more active each day. Yesterday, she was sitting up in her bed and looked quite comfortable. She is constantly trying to sit up on her own and with a little help gets some relief when she is able to sit up. Dawn moves her limbs around a lot and the doctors say this is very good for her joints. We still think she is planning her escape! She enjoys a back massage and leans forward to let us know she would like one. The dirty looks are occurring more frequently as her frustration level rises as well. We are not very good lip readers Dawny, but we are trying!!! love you! They plan on putting her in a chair for a while today.

Dawn's surgery was postponed again. Dawn is doing well. One of the other surgeries took longer than expected so Dawn was bumped. The doctors have lowered her morphine dosage and she is improving. She is also able to do regular dialysis for her kidneys which is only three hours a day. This is an improvement from the 24 hour machine they had her on. We listened to Bob Dylan today and she said she was enjoying it. Her sleep was very peaceful this afternoon and she looked as if she was having some crazy dreams. She moves around a lot in her bed, but the doctors say that it is good exercise for her. I try to help Dawn as best I can and I told her that I was not a very good nurse and she said, "I'm not a good nurse either!". I thought that was funny. These little things make me laugh. Dawn is getting stronger everyday.

The doctors said Dawn will be having surgery today at 1:00 or 2:00. She is becoming more and more alert everyday and as Scott put it "is trying to plan her escape nearly every moment she is awake".

In response to a question someone had about the type of malaria Dawn contracted- The doctors say she has severe malaria using a medical term that I dare not try to remember because it will be incorrect. The loss of tissue was not from the malaria, but resulted from medicine she had to take to stay alive in the first week she was in the hospital. Basically, Dawn was in organ failure due to the malaria. In order to keep her alive, the doctors were giving her three types of blood pressure medicine so that all the blood would go to her vital organs. Because all the blood was going to her vital organs, there wasn't any blood getting to her extremities and the tissue in these areas died. This is why she is having so many surgeries, to remove the dead tissue. They are very complex surgeries because they are also rerouting her arteries. I hope that clarifies any questions many of you may have. I am trying to be as tasteful and respectful with my explanations as I can for Dawn's sake.

I apologize if my descriptions about the medical procedures are not clear- we all know Dawn is the nurse! I wanted to correct an earlier entry when I said they removed her tracheal tube. What they actually did is cap it so that the air can remain inside allowing her to talk, but she doesn't have the strength to do that yet so she is still mouthing her words to us. Dawn is doing well today. she is giving more and more dirty looks and told us that she was very frustrated. She keeps moving her body around and is very curious about what is going on. Unfortunately her curiosity only takes her so far because the morphine will kick in and she will fade back into sleep. Some of us are ready for her questions and I'm sure we will be getting more and more of them as days pass. She is on the board for surgery tomorrow and as long as she has a restful night and is still stable tomorrow, she will go in for surgery. We will be thinking of you D's. Stay strong.

They removed the tracheal tube today to see if Dawn could speak, but the doctors said she is too weak and it requires a lot of air pressure. Therefore, they put the tracheal tube back in. She is not ready yet but hopefully soon.

The doctors checked all of her dressings from the surgery and there is no infection. Dr. O'Connor says he is not concerned that she is infected and that a rise in white blood cell count is nothing that we should be alarmed about. So we can be at ease with this bit of information. The doctor seems to think she is doing quite well. I was greeted today with a full smile from Dawn's big white choppers- it absolutely made my day. Shortly after this she was fast asleep. It is the little things that remind you of Dawn's personality- a big smile, a raised eyebrow, and even a dirty look sometimes. When you see these things come out you know that she is still Dawn.

Dawn is resting today. The doctors were concerned because her white blood cell count is up which may mean she is fighting infection. They are going to do some tests and report back to us on her condition. The doctors are trying to ensure she gets as much rest as possible.

On Saturday, Dawn was resting most of the day because of the lack of sleep she got the night before. She is on morphine for the pain, but is still somewhat lucid, drifting in and out of sleep. Her lips move much slower because of the meds which makes it even more difficult to understand her. Her boyfriend Scott seems to be the best at interpreting what she says and she often asks for him. Family and friends have been informing Dawn of all the love and support she has gotten from all of the people in her life who have sent their prayers and thoughts through kind words, cards and visits. She often asks questions about the lives of her friends and family who are not able to be with her. When Dawn is up asking questions and trying to talk, her pressure goes up and she becomes restless. Therefore, the nurse sedated her on Saturday evening so she could rest. We have been informed how important it is that she rests and visits be limited so that she may fully recover. It is very exciting that she is able to communicate with us but we have to remember what a long road to recovery she still has so we are taking it slowly. We love you Dawn and it kills us not to be able to be with you at every moment, but for the sake of your recovery we must be patient. Every day Dawn improves just a little bit more.

Friday night Dawn had a restless night of sleep. She kept waking up with questions. At one point she asked for a doctor to come in the room. When the doctor came she was mouthing her questions so quickly that nobody could understand her. She was then given something to help her relax and sleep. It is difficult to think that any of Dawn's questions are going unanswered, but she needs her rest. In time, they will remove her tracheal tube and she will be able to ask her questions and get answers with ease.

Yesterday the doctors told Dawn about her loss and explained to her the state she is currently in. She did not react in any particular way which probably means she will need to be told many times yet. She was very active during the day, mouthing her questions to family and friends and getting frustrated when they could not read her lips. Later in the afternoon she was much more relaxed because of her meds and even laughed and smiled a few times. Mostly, it is so wonderful to see her eyes open all the time. Just from everything that occurred yesterday, I know that she is still the same Dawn she has always been and we can't wait until she can use her voice again!

Dawn is awake today and somewhat alert!! She is trying to talk but is not able to due to the tracheal tube they have inserted to help her breath. Family is with her and is anticipating the many questions Dawn will have about her progress. The nurse asked her if she was in any pain and she shook her head no. They still have her on pain meds but she is not sedated.

People have asked where they should send cards and gifts. You can send them to Colleen Hughes, 14664 Aston Way, Lockport, IL, 60441. Flowers are not allowed in Dawn's room but there is a wall full of pictures and cards that we keep adding on to. Anything that would make Dawn's stay in the hospital more comfortable would be a great gift- comfort stuff. Definitely not necessary but if you feel the need.

In light of recent events concerning Dawn and the surgery she has undergone, Dawn's family have asked on behalf of Dawn that no visitors come to see her until she is ready. While this situation will be heart-breaking for all concerned, we must allow Dawn time to cope and process what has happened. We realize how many people's lives Dawn has touched and have appreciated all of the love and support. The website will continue to be updated so that you may check on her progress.
